Networking events can be a mix of excitement and awkwardness—just like your favourite sitcoms! Imagine a business networking meeting filled with some of the most iconic TV characters.
How would they behave? Let’s dive into the hilarity of what might happen if these sitcom legends attended a Simply Business Club networking event.
Michael Scott (The Office – US)
Michael would show up with a stack of business cards featuring an over-the-top headshot and the tagline “World’s Best Networker.” He’d spend half the time handing them out and the other half telling long-winded stories that don’t quite have a point. He’d probably organise an impromptu ‘icebreaker’ game that leaves everyone more uncomfortable than engaged.
Del Boy (Only Fools and Horses)
Derek Trotter would stroll in with a suitcase full of “exclusive deals” that are too good to be true. He’d be trying to sell knockoff briefcases and ‘genuine’ Rolex watches before anyone could even introduce themselves. His go-to phrase? “This time next year, we’ll be millionaires!” Unfortunately, his networking approach would probably result in more eye-rolls than business deals.
Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)
Sheldon would begin the evening by critiquing the layout of the networking space, citing the optimal seating arrangement for maximising business efficiency. He’d then present a PowerPoint on why he should be everyone’s top contact, all while refusing to shake hands due to hygiene concerns. Small talk? Not a chance!
Patsy Stone (Absolutely Fabulous)
Patsy would make an entrance with a glass of champagne already in hand. She’d float between groups, dropping names of important people she may or may not actually know. Instead of business cards, she’d casually hand out invites to the after-party, ensuring the networking event turns into a wild social affair.
Joey Tribbiani (Friends)
Joey would struggle to remember names but would charm everyone with his classic “How you doin’?” greeting. He’d likely mistake the event for a casting call and start pitching himself for acting gigs rather than making business connections. That said, his natural charisma might just land him an unexpected opportunity!
Basil Fawlty (Fawlty Towers)
Basil would start off by trying to impress, only to end up offending half the room. When asked what he does, he’d deliver a long-winded complaint about the state of the hospitality industry before snapping at the event organisers about the coffee quality. He’d storm out mid-event, muttering about the “riff-raff” in attendance.
Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation)
Leslie would arrive prepared with colour-coded folders, an elaborate networking strategy, and a list of personalised icebreaker questions for every attendee. She’d be the most enthusiastic person in the room, making genuine connections while also handing out waffles and promoting the importance of local business.
Networking events bring together all sorts of personalities, and while we might not have quite as extreme characters as these in real life (thankfully!), the mix of enthusiasm, ambition, and occasional awkwardness is all part of the experience.
